Track: Gallon leads Armwood boys to fifth-place finish
PUNTA GORDA - The Armwood High boys track and field team finished fifth Thursday at the Class 3A-Region 3 meet at Charlotte High. Gibbs won the boys meet with 70 points, edging Fort Myers (69) by one. Armwood had 32. Armwood’s Austin Gallon qualified for the state meet in two events, taking third in the high jump (6-0) and fourth in the 110 hurdles (15.11). The Hawks also got state qualifying results from Aaron Covington in the high jump (fourth place) and Jordan Greene in the 300 hurdles (third). The only first-place performance from a Hillsborough County athlete came from East Bay in the 4x400 relay (3:20.14).Strawberry Crest’s Chauncey Thomas (second, triple jump) and Karel Hamilton (third, 400) and Lennard’s William Hood (fourth, triple jump) and Avery Shaw (fourth, 800) also qualified for state. In the girls meet, Naples won with 82 points, while Strawberry Crest took sixth with 36. The Strawberry Crest 4x100 relay placed first in 48.58. Also qualifying for next Friday’s Class 3A state meet in Jacksonville from Strawberry Crest were Yasmine Gardiner in the 200 (25.70), Terra Brooks in the triple jump (third) and Brittany Barber in the 100 (fourth). Armwood’s Kiki Newsome qualified in the shot put (fourth).
