TAMPA — Too much speed. Too much depth. Too much Deon Cain.
Host Tampa Bay Tech (2-1, 1-0 Class 7A-District 7) was just too much for Wiregrass Ranch (2-2, 0-1) in the first district game of the season for the teams.
Cain, the Titans’ junior quarterback, passed for 254 yards and three touchdowns in Coach Jayson Roberts’ up-tempo spread offense.
“Sometimes [the Bulls] weren’t even ready to play,” Cain said. “When we got that fast tempo, their defense can’t stick with us because we have too much speed on our team.”
The Titans wore the Bulls down with five-receiver sets and the tough running of Deon Thompson, despite the injuries of two key offensive players.
Tajee Fullwood and Jason Williams left the game with injuries. According to Roberts, Williams was taken by ambulance to Tampa General Hospital for precautionary tests after a neck injury in the fourth quarter.
The Titans’ defense allowed minus-3 yards of offense in the first half and stopped the Bulls’ best scoring threat by forcing a fumble inside Tampa Bay Tech’s 5-yard line .
