Tampa Tribune Prep Athletes of the Week: March 17-22

Each week, the Tribune prep sports staff selects a Male and Female Athlete of the Week. The selections are based on athletic performance. For video, visit TBO.com/sports/preps to meet our selections.

Ryan Boyd, Plant City

WHY WE CHOSE HIM: Boyd, a sophomore right-hander on the baseball team, tossed a complete-game no-hitter, his second of the season, and had a career-high 14 strikeouts in a 7-0 victory against East Bay. Facing 27 batters, Boyd walked three and another was hit by a pitch.

COLLEGE PLANS: Boyd’s dream opportunity would be to pitch for Florida State University, where he would also study mathematics.

Sofia Emond, Plant

WHY WE CHOSE HER: Emond, a junior, scored a season-high six goals with two assists in a 15-6 win against Steinbrenner to keep the Panthers’ girls lacrosse team undefeated at 6-0. Emond leads Plant with 19 goals this season, and she has seven assists.

COLLEGE: Emond has verbally committed to Virginia Commonwealth University.
