Tampa's Colwill prevails at USA Diving Grand Prix
FORT LAUDERDALE - Tampa Prep and University of Georgia product Chris Colwill won the 3-meter springboard final at the AT&T USA Diving Grand Prix, putting together one of his best performances of the year to capture first place by less than a point. Colwill, a 2008 Olympian, came from behind to beat China’s Li Shixin by .35 points. Among Colwill’s six dives in the final, he scored 79.80 on an extremely difficult forward 4 1/2 tuck and, on his last dive, 91 points on a reverse 3 1/2 somersault tuck. Colwill said he believes taking gold here will help his preparation for the Olympic trials next month."For my confidence it’s very big," Colwill said. "I have a history of doing very good in prelims and semifinals and falling back a little bit in finals."
