Boys basketball: Tampa Prep wins in double OT
TAMPA - Tampa Prep boys basketball coach Joe Fenlon had plenty of reasons to rant at his team at halftime of Saturday's Class 2A-Region 3 final. His team trailed underdog Admiral Farragut by eight points and was being dominated on the boards. But Fenlon kept his cool, and doing so could be the biggest reason the Terrapins are headed back to the state semifinals. Tampa Prep regained the lead with a strong third quarter, and the Terrapins outlasted visiting Admiral Farragut in double overtime to win the Class 2A-Region 3 championship, 52-44."Unbelievable," a physically drained Fenlon said. "I don't believe we've ever been outhustled during my time here, but in the first half we got beat to everything - rebounds, loose balls, everything. "Still, that was the calmest I've ever been in a locker room, because there was no way we could lose those kids." The win sends Tampa Prep (25-3) into Wednesday's state semis against Orlando First Academy. With Devontae Morgan's minutes limited because of two early fouls, sophomore Josh Heath was left to provide the offensive spark. Heath scored 14 of Tampa Prep's 17 first-half points and finished with a game-high 26. "When Devontae came out, (Heath) was forced to shoulder the whole team," Fenlon said. "You don't want to have to do that to a sophomore, but he's not a typical sophomore." Christopher Myrick led Admiral Farragut with 13 points.
