Tampa Catholic loses in 2A-5 semis

ST. PETERSBURG — Tampa Catholic lost its Class 2A-Region 5 boys semifinal to Boca Ciega, 4-3, in a match that was decided in doubles play.

Boca Ciega, a district champion, won single matches at Nos. 1-3 to take a 3-2 lead entering doubles play. The Pirates beat the Crusaders 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles to win the match.

“Our No. 1 doubles is a very good team, but we just came across a guy who was No. 1 in the state,” Tampa Catholic coach Steve Adler said.

Tampa Catholic did win at No. 2 doubles, with Jake Keyser and Britt Logan earning the third point with a 6-2, 6-4 victory. Harrison Winter won at No. 4 singles while Logan won at No. 5 singles.

Pasco girls advance

DADE CITY — For the second time in three years, Pasco (16-3) will play for a regional championship in tennis.

A week after winning its fourth straight district title, Pasco swept all seven matches against Tarpon Springs (5-10) without dropping a set.

Pasco will host the Class 2A-Region 4 final on Thursday with its opponent determined today when Hernando travels to Fivay.
