Tampa baseball player selected for national team tryout

Jesuit High rising sophomore Clayton Kwiatkowski was selected for team trials for the USA National Under-15 baseball team in Cary, N.C., from July 13-19. Kwiatkowski earned the selection after a solid performance in the 15U National Team Championships in Fort Myers. Kwiatkowski was one of 15 players selected from the Fort Myers showcase. Meanwhile, King catcher Jose Lopez verbally committed to Florida International University. Lopez batted .306 with 15 RBIs last season for the Lions, who reached the Class 6A state semifinals. Lopez spent last weekend in Minneapolis playing in the Perfect Game USA 2013 National Showcase, where he went 2-for-5 with a triple and a home run. Lopez was joined in Minneapolis by Jesuit senior Ryan McCullers.
Football Tampa Bay Tech rising senior linebacker Fred Russ verbally committed to Florida International University. Russ (5-foot-10, 220 pounds) finished with 86 tackles as a junior with one forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Russ is the second football player from Tampa to commit to FIU this week. Gaither quarterback Alex McGough picked FIU on Monday. Soccer Cambridge Christian's Madison Cox verbally committed to the University of Tampa to play soccer and run track. A rising senior, Cox has 49 career goals - 19 last season - and 18 assists. In her junior season at the Class 1A state track meet, Cox finished third in the 200 and fifth in the 100.
