LITHIA — The Titans scored two touchdowns with less than 30 seconds to play for a dramatic season-opening victory.
Austin Cobb kicked a 27-yard field goal to put the host Wolves ahead 17-12 with 1:40 remaining, but sophomore track star Jaisen Randolph returned the ensuing kickoff to midfield.
Tech took the lead with 25 seconds left when quarterback Deon Cain scrambled 19 yards to the end zone after being unable to find an open receiver.
“The kid never panics. The moment never gets too big for him,” Titans coach Jayson Roberts said of the Clemson-bound senior, who also scored from 12 yards out midway through the second quarter.
Cain came up short on a two-point conversion attempt after his late score, and an unsportsmanlike penalty forced the Titans to kick off from their 25-yard line.
Down a point, Newsome took over on its own 45 with 19 seconds to go, but defensive back Chalo Judge picked off a first-down pass by Cole Schaller and took the ball into the end zone with seven seconds left.
