Class 2A-Region 3
WHERE: The Long Center, Clearwater
WHEN: Friday, 9 a.m.
OUTLOOK: There is no reason to believe Jesuit and Academy of the Holy Names can’t win their fifth and fourth regional titles, respectively. Academy looks particularly deep and should qualify enough girls to make a run at a team title at next week’s state championships. On the individual front, Academy’s Olivia Kirkpatrick could win the 100 backstroke and the 50 free, and Spoto’s Maureen Moore is favored in the 500 and 200 free races. All of Academy’s relays have legitimate chances to advance to the state meet. Jaguar Clare Fleming could also contend for multiple titles.
Class 1A-Region 3
WHERE: North Shore Aquatic Complex, St. Petersburg
WHEN: Saturday, 11 a.m.
OUTLOOK: Tampa Prep’s Rasmus Skjaerpe, the defending Class 1A 200 free champion, is stronger and faster and is a heavy favorite to win the 200 IM and 100 backstroke. Berkeley’s boys, however, are the favorites to win their fifth consecutive region title. Tampa Prep’s girls, which won last week’s district title, could find themselves in a tight battle for top representation among Hillsborough County teams.
