Swimming: Mitchell junior wins state crown

STUART — Taylor Anderson was seeded third heading in the 50 freestyle finals at the Class 3A State Swim Meet at the Sailfish Splashpark Aquatic Athletics Center. However, the Mitchell High junior took more than a half-second off her time to win the event in 23.29.

Anderson held off Naples Gulf Coast’s Elise Haan (23.55) and Caitlin Myers of Niceville (24.02). Wiregrass Ranch’s Athena Cimino was sixth in 24.20.

Plant City’s Bailey Bowden, Hillsborough County’s lone swimmer to make it to the finals, finished fifth in the 500 freestyle (4:58.01) and sixth in the 200 freestyle (1:54.21).

Tallahassee Chiles won the girls meet with 250 points. Osceola finished fourth with 132 and Northeast was fifth (121).

Osceola Alexandiria Wittman finished third in the 200 freestyle (1:49.58), fourth in the 500 freestyle (4:53.04), fourth in the 400 freestyle relay and fifth in the 200 medley relay. Savannah Sawyers was also part of the two Osceola relays and she finished fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.56).

Northeast’s Amanda Burrows was fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:06.98).

On the boys side, Miami Belen Jesuit won with 249 points. Osceola’s Calvin Bryant was second in both the 200 freestyle (1:39.37) and 500 freestyle (4:23.47)
