Swimming: Berkeley rules at region championships

ST. PETERSBURG — Berkeley Prep was able to sweep the Class 1A-Region 3 championships, as the Buccaneers edged city rival Tampa Prep on both the boys and girls sides Saturday afternoon.

The Buccaneers’ boys scored 368 points as a team, in comparison to the Terrapins’ 286.5, with Shorecrest Prep (264 points), Naples Community School (180.5 points) and Clearwater Central Catholic (168 points) rounding out the top five.

Among the region champions moving on to state were Tampa Prep’s Gregory Campo (100 butterfly), Shorecrest’s Joshua Chen (100 breaststroke) and CCC’s Matthe Hirschberger (500 freestyle).

On the girls side, Berkeley Prep edged Tampa Prep, 320-317, to win the title.

A slew of girls were able to nab region titles and punch their ticket to state, including Berkeley Prep’s Elle Chancey (50, 100 freestyles), CCC’s Emma Spilman (100 butterfly) and Mackenzie Stumpf (100 breaststroke).
