LAND O’ LAKES — It looked like a trap game heading into next week’s matchup against neighborhood rival Land O’ Lakes, but Sunlake was able to turn a first-half defensive battle into a rout during the final two quarters.
Sunlake utilized its strong offensive line and was able to muscle 171 yards rushing, 134 coming from running back Nathan Johnson, in a shutout win at Seahawk Stadium.
The Seahawks (6-1) were not able to get much going at all against the Wildcats’ stiff front seven, as Sunlake amassed a little more than 110 yards of offense by halftime. Opportunities were rare and Sunlake kicker Chris Wilkinson drilled a 38-yard field goal with 1:36 left before intermission.
Everything started to click for Sunlake during the second half, as the Seahawks’ defense notched a safety and Johnson added a touchdown to extend the lead to 11-0 against Wesley Chapel (0-6). Johnson added another scoring run early in the fourth quarter and helped seal Sunlake’s sixth win of the season.
Sunlake quarterback Esteban LeWallen finished 14 of 22 passes for 117 yards.
Wesley Chapel was only able to churn out 121 yards of total offense, with 90 coming via the ground attack.
