LAND O’ LAKES — In a Class 6A-District 6 game that Sunlake coach Bill Browning didn’t hesitate to call a must-win, the Seahawks overcame the loss of their starting quarterback by shutting down Mitchell’s vaunted running game in a dominant defensive effort.
Sunlake (5-1, 1-1) held the Mustangs (3-3, 0-2) to 69 total yards and forced four turnovers, including interceptions by Joey Baptiste, Austin Yeloushan and Jacob Guzman.
“It kept us in the hunt,” Browning said of the victory. Both teams lost their district openers and were trying to avoid a second district defeat. “It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that out.”
Seahawks quarterback Dayton Feiden suffered an apparent left knee injury on Sunlake’s opening drive and did not return.
Backup Esteban LeWallen finished the game, completing six of 11 passes for 44 yards and rushing for 28 yards.
Running back Nathan Johnson continued his breakout junior campaign with 27 carries for 151 yards and both Sunlake touchdowns. Johnson has rushed for at least 100 yards and a touchdown in five consecutive games.
Chris Wilkinson added field goals of 32 and 30 yards.
