ZEPHYRHILLS — Esteban LeWallen threw for season highs of 170 yards and two touchdowns as playoff-bound Sunlake defeated Zephyrhills in the regular-season finale for both teams.
The Bulldogs (7-3) grabbed an early lead on a 22-yard touchdown run by Jaylen Pickett, but the Seahawks took over from there.
On the ensuing drive, Sunlake (9-1) took advantage of multiple fourth-down penalties by Zephyrhills before LeWallen found Ryan Reiss on an 8-yard scoring toss.
Chris Wilkinson drilled field goals of 36 and 20 yards to give the Seahawks a 12-7 halftime edge.
On the first offensive play of the third quarter, LeWallen hooked up with Wanya Lamar on a 70-yard bomb to extend the Sunlake lead to 19-7.
Zephyrhills trimmed the deficit to 19-14 with 6:11 left in the game on a 3-yard touchdown pass from Ty Tanner to Devon Brockington.
The Bulldogs got the ball back with 1:58 left, but they couldn’t move the ball and turned it over on downs to seal the victory for the Seahawks.
Sunlake will travel next Friday to take on the Gainesville Hurricanes in the 6A region quarterfinals.
