STRAW. CREST 27
DOVER — Chase Blackmon scored offensive and defensive touchdowns to lead Strawberry Crest to a lopsided home victory.
The game served as a preseason tune-up for Chargers senior Tristan Hyde, who was ranked among the best quarterbacks in the county last year before he suffered a season-ending knee injury in the third week. He sat out his freshman campaign with a fractured elbow.
After a scoreless opening quarter, delayed 22 minutes at the start by lightning, sophomore Theo Williams produced the first points on a 4-yard run with 10:39 remaining in the second. Three minutes later, Hyde combined with Blackmon on a 45-yard touchdown pass to make it 14-0.
“I had to shake some rust off in the beginning,” Hyde said, “but just being back out there, it felt great.”
Strawberry Crest scored defensive touchdowns 17 seconds apart late in the third quarter. Blackmon recovered a bad snap in the end zone with 4:05 to go. Moments later, Farron Rainford ripped a ball free in a crowded backfield and rambled 11 yards for another score.
Following an exchange of turnovers deep in Strawberry Crest territory, a swarm of Middleton defenders spoiled the shutout, scoring on a safety with 1:26 left.
