DOVER — Strawberry Crest (5-2) forced four fumbles, two that set up offensive scores, and allowed only a late touchdown in a non-district win against Riverview.
A loud homecoming crowd enjoyed another fine performance by the Chargers defense, which has allowed just 31 points in the past four games.
The defense sparked a sometimes sputtering attack. After the offense fumbled and punted on its last two possessions in the first quarter, the defense recovered a fumble at the Sharks’ 10-yard line. A play later, Austin Carswell found Farron Rainford to extend the Chargers’ lead to 12-0.
Riverview (2-4) was led by sophomore Fred McCoy, who rushed for more than 200 yards and set up its only score with a 68-yard run.
The Chargers defense was led by seniors Alex Carswell, Matt Chaney, Isaiah Smallwood and Cesar Abadia.
“We feel like we have a very, very strong defense,” Crest coach John Kelly said. “Other than a couple of big plays (by Riverview) … we were solid across the board.”
“Stay hungry and humble,” Carswell said when asked about the deciding Class 7A-District 8 game against East Bay next week.
