LUTZ — Steinbrenner got off to a strong start on its quest to make school history with a 20-9 win against Sunlake on Friday.
The Warriors football team is the only program in the school that has never made it to the playoffs. Behind a solid night from quarterback Quentin Poteralski, the Warriors overcame a 3-0 deficit to take a commanding 20-3 lead as the clock wound down. There was one problem for the Warriors, however. Star receiver Jayquese Dantley went down twice with minor injuries. There’s no word on if it will affect him for next week’s opener at Plant City.
Steinbrenner coach Andres Perez-Reinaldo said that he was pleased with the way his team came out of the gate.
“Every year is a new year,’’ he said. “Every year Steinbrenner has had an opportunity to make a run. This is where we are today.’’
Dantley gave Steinbrenner the lead with a 5-yard touchdown run and Justin Moffatt made it 14-3 early in the third quarter. Poteralski hooked up with Moffatt on a 36-yard touchdown pass and the Warriors coasted from there.
