TAMPA — Sickles used a 31-point second quarter to erase an early deficit and earn a Class 7A-District 7 road win against Freedom on Friday night.
The Gryphons (5-0) trailed 13-0 late in the first quarter before their offense got going, and they scored the game’s final 53 points.
Starting quarterback Isaac Holder connected on touchdown passes of 45 yards to Jaaron Barrett and 48 to Chett Levay in a one-minute span to give the Gryphons the lead for good.
Sickles then gave way to star running back Ray Ray McCloud.
After being held to 28 yards on eight first-quarter carries, McCloud exploded in the second and third quarters to finish with 177 yards on 21 carries. The junior also scored three touchdowns, including two from 30 yards out.
Holder finished 6-for-14 through the air, but he still threw for 165 yards.
The lone offensive touchdown for Freedom (1-5) came on a 1-yard plunge by Josh Collazo late in the first quarter.
