Prep notes: Wharton’s McGill signs with NAIA Mobile
Wharton High senior point guard
CJ McGill, who led the Wildcats to their first state tournament last season, signed with the University of Mobile, an NAIA program.
McGill, a first-team all-Hillsborough County selection, was recently given the Alston “Mac” McGahagin Award by Hillsborough County Schools, which goes to the top senior boys basketball player in the county.
McGill averaged 17 points per game and finished his career with 1,036 points. McGill missed his entire sophomore season with a knee injury but still earned a career record of 76-10 with three district titles while at Wharton.
Baseball The District 15 representatives for this season’s Florida Dairy Farmers award were announced as selected by area Florida Athletic Coaches Association members. District 15 chair and Gaither coach Frank Permuy said the representatives in seven classifications now will be entered into the pool of players selected as the Player of the Year representatives for their Class and one player will be selected as Baseball’s Mr. Florida in May.
District 15’s Representatives are: Class 8A – Tyler Danish, P/3B, Durant. Class 7A – Cole Gordon, DH/INF, Steinbrenner. Class 6A – Brett Morales, P/3B, King. Class 5A – Spencer Trayner, P/SS, Jesuit. Class 4A – Bubba Olivera, INF, Berkeley Prep. Class 3A – Sam Martin, P/1B/OF, Tampa Prep. Class 2A – Levi Gilcrease, OF/P, Cambridge Christian.
