Prep Football Spring Two-A-Days: Lennard and Tampa Bay Tech

Lennard COACH: Keith Chattin 2012 RECORD: 0-10 DISTRICT: 6A-8 (Armwood, Blake, Chamberlain, Hillsborough, Jefferson, King, Leto, Robinson) KEY LOSSES: RB/WR/KR Victor Williams, DE Ricardo Saint Louis, RB Kelton Hallback
KEY RETURNERS: LB Terrance Bell, DB Danny Cooper. QB Diontae Johnson, RB Grant Farley, RB/S Darron Daniel SPRING FOCUS: Entering his second season as head coach, Chattin is optimistic for the summer knowing he can rely on 14 returning starters from the 2012 season. Highlighting the list of returning players is Bell, a rising senior who was the only Lennard player to garner Western Conference recognition last season. Bell finished his junior season with a team-high 76 tackles and two sacks. Joining Bell on defense will be Cooper, who had a team-high three interceptions. Johnson, who started as a sophomore, threw for 430 yards and three touchdowns. Chattin said turnovers have been a focus for the Longhorns this spring. The Longhorns threw nine interceptions and lost 20 of 24 fumbles. “We had 34 total turnovers last season. If we don’t turn the ball over, we’re 5-5 at worst.” Losing Williams will be difficult, but Chattin is pleased with his depth at the skill positions. “We have five or six skill kids that can do all things. Now we won’t count on one guy.” JAMBOREE: May 23 vs. Riverview (at Lennard) SCHEDULE Aug. 23 — Kickoff Classic, at St. Pete Catholic Aug. 30 — East Bay Sept. 6 — King Sept. 12 — at Chamberlain Sept. 20 — Blake Sept. 27 — at Hillsborough Oct. 4 — Robinson Oct. 11 — at Jefferson Oct. 18 — Armwood Oct. 25 — at Leto Nov. 1 — at Spoto Nov. 8 — bye Tampa Bay Tech COACH: Jayson Roberts DISTRICT: 7A-7 (Chamberlain, Freedom, Gaither, Steinbrenner, Sickles, Wiregrass Ranch) 2012 RECORD: 7-4 KEY LOSSES: WR Richard Benjamin, OL/DL Jevon Fripp, DL Antonio Guerad, OL Dominique Parker, OL Tyree St. Louis KEY RETURNERS: QB Deon Cain, WR/CB Tajee Fullwood, MLB Fred Russ, RB Deon Thompson, DE Micah Tucker, OL/DL Rashawn Washington, LB Jalen Woodall SPRING FOCUS: Roberts believed his team could defeat any opponent last season, but the Titans occasionally beat themselves. The third-year coach has focused primarily on discipline since a blowout loss to Durant in the first round of the playoffs. “We didn’t feel like there was a team on our schedule that flat-out beat us because they were better than us,” Roberts said. “We just lost to teams that were simply more disciplined than us.” The Titans will pursue their sixth consecutive trip to the playoffs this fall, and Fullwood likely will lead the charge. One of the best athletes in the area, the two-way standout and return specialist already has received offers from Florida State and other top programs. A greater challenge will be filling the holes left by massive offensive linemen Parker, a graduate, and St. Louis, who transferred to IMG Academy in Bradenton. The rebuilt line will provide the blocking for returning starters Cain and Thompson.
