TAMPA — It didn’t take long for Plant to show its Class 8A-District 6 rival why it contends for state championships year after year.
Plant used a big first half to cruise to a 33-point victory at Wharton and wrap up another district title.
Wharton had a chance to control its destiny for a district championship with a win, but those hopes were quickly dashed.
The Panthers (7-1-1, 4-0) took the opening drive and scored when quarterback Colby Brown found Austin Hudson in the corner of the end zone from 6 yards out.
Plant used two field goals to up its lead before breaking it open when defensive back Derrick Baity picked off a pass and took it back 40 yards for a touchdown.
Fletcher Barnes added a touchdown run and TD reception to give the Panthers a 35-0 lead.
Brown went 20-for-27 for 210 yards and two TDs despite not playing in the fourth quarter. Patrick Brooks led Plant’s rushing attack with 88 yards on 11 carries.
Chase Litton threw two TD passes for Wharton (6-3, 2-2).
