LARGO — Pinellas Park outscored Countryside by 30 points in the second half Friday night and turned a close, win-or-stay-home game into a rout.
The Patriots secured the Class 7A-District 9 runner-up position and a third straight trip to the postseason with a convincing 46-10 victory.
“It means the world to us,” running back Donte Maxson said after leading Patriots’ run-heavy attack with 139 yards and three touchdowns. “This is the first time we’ve gone to the playoffs three years in a row, and now we’re looking to win.”
On the Patriots’ first play of the second half, Maxson blasted through the right side and took off for an 80-yard score that put Pinellas Park ahead 24-10.
“That was huge,” Patriots coach Kenneth Crawford said. “Donte’s got the ability to go any time he touches the ball, and to see him break out and go like that was awesome.”
Pinellas Park could do no wrong over the final two quarters. Quarterback Angel Addison threw one second-half pass — 56 yards for a touchdown to Alonzo McCray.
Countryside led twice before succumbing to Pinellas Park’s bruising ground attack. Donte Satcher opened the night’s scoring with a 25-yard run on fourth-and-2. After the Patriots’ Pierre Johnson answered with a 35-yard score and successful 2-point conversion, Cougars kicker Martin Turowski converted a 35-yard field goal.
Maxson’s 22-yard touchdown run in the second quarter gave Pinellas Park the lead for good.
