Player of the Year
Imani Thomas, Academy at the Lakes, Fr.
Thomas had some big shoes to fill with the departure of Tatiana Manuel (graduation) from a year ago. Not only was Thomas able to step in and produce, but also the center put up numbers that rivaled any of the top players in the Tampa Bay area. She was second on the team in scoring, averaging 17.1, and had 11.3 rebounds, in helping lead Academy at the Lakes back to the Class 2A state semifinals.
Coach of the Year
Phyllis Crain, Land O’ Lakes
Three seasons ago when Crain took the Land O’ Lakes job, thinking about reaching the state playoffs seemed like something far off in the distance. Crain helped bring Land O’ Lakes not only respectability, but also to a level the school had never been to in girls basketball: the state semifinals. Crain guided her team to a 24-5 record, through a tough district schedule, a postseason road win in Inverness and a state semifinal berth in Lakeland for the first time in school history.
