PASCO COUNTY PREP SWIMMING PREVIEW
AncloteCOACHES: Boys - Casey Lanser (second year); Girls - Meagan Finneran (second year) DISTRICT: 2A-5 HOME POOL: TBA OUTLOOK: Unlike last year, the Sharks had more than 20 swimmers show up for an organizational meeting. Unfortunately, like last year, Anclote still doesn't have a home pool and isn't sure whether it will field a team. The school already had to pull out of this week's meet with Fivay and Ridgewood.Bishop McLaughlinCOACH: Brian Hengesbach (third year) DISTRICT: 1A-3 HOME POOL: Veterans Memorial Park, Hudson KEY RETURNING SWIMMERS: Girls - Jemma Cropanese, Yvonne Baumrucker, Sarah McConnell SWIMMERS LOST: None. OUTLOOK: Bishop McLaughlin has a strong girls team with plenty of experience, led by Cropanese, who was Class 1A-District 3 champion in the 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly. The boys are inexperienced, but some members of the baseball team, led by pitcher David Heintz, have decided to use swimming as a fall training program. Heintz won the 50 freestyle in the Hurricanes' opening meet against St. Pete Catholic. FivayCOACHES: Boys - Amanda Paulo (first year); Girls - Nan Bodnar (first year) DISTRICT: 2A-5 HOME POOL: Veterans Memorial Park, Hudson KEY RETURNING SWIMMERS: None. SWIMMERS LOST: None. OUTLOOK: The first-year program has plenty of talent. Jake Atwell, Tim Bennett, Coty Dalrymple, Dominick Grilli, Andy Roache and Tyler Sambucci all have experience at their previous schools, while Megan Nunn also swam last year. The boys won their first meet of the season against Ridgewood, 100-64. GulfCOACH: Casey Clafin (fourth year) DISTRICT: 2A-5 HOME POOL: New Port Richey Recreation Center KEY RETURNING SWIMMERS: Boys - Hunter Swartsel, Tyler Waide, Brad Bachard, Shannen Gleghorn. Girls - Kelsey Magolan, Sarah Bachand, Audrey Kuhns. SWIMMERS LOST: Boys - Aaron Hayman. Girls - Laura Jauch, Megan Jacobs, Casey Parera. OUTLOOK: Clafin adds the girls program to his coaching duties this year. The boys will probably struggle to win dual meets because of depth, but with the returning swimmers, they should be able to compete at the Sunshine Athletic Conference and district meets. The girls only have nine members, and six of them are competing at the high-school level for the first time. HudsonCOACHES: Boys - Ken Wiebeck (first year); Girls - Ed Wilke (first year) DISTRICT: 2A-5 HOME POOL: Veterans Memorial Park, Hudson KEY RETURNING SWIMMERS: Boys - Robert Struble, Shane Jones, Charlie Miller. Girls - Joanie Heise. SWIMMERS LOST: Boys - Jon Liggieri, Tyler Strand; Girls - Tianna Perry. OUTLOOK: With the opening of Fivay, the Cobras are definitely in a rebuilding process. According to Wiebeck, more than half of the team's swimmers are at Fivay because of boundary changes. "We will rely on the leadership of the returning seniors," Wiebeck said. "Their focus will be on individual goals and improvement and on team spirit." Fivay and Hudson will meet Sept. 29 at Veterans Memorial Pool. Land O' LakesCOACHES: Boys - Barbara Hayes (11th year); Girls - Robin Hilgenberg (10th year) DISTRICT: 2A-5 HOME POOL: Land O' Lakes Recreation Center, Collier Parkway KEY RETURNING SWIMMERS: Boys - Patrick Gray, Austen Johannessen, Connor Sequeira, James Adams, Grant Pawlak. Girls - Alex Pierovich, Meredith Diamond, Andrea Mapugay, Haley Long, Savannah Oliver. SWIMMERS LOST: Boys - Arthur Mapugay, Andrew Busot, David Clark, Siddhesh Muley. Girls - Karley Nelson, Kelsey McCullough, Lauren Lynch. OUTLOOK: Hayes says the boys team is rebuilding, but in reality, it is just reloading. Last year, Land O' Lakes and Mitchell - two of the top teams in the county - didn't meet, but that has changed this year as the two will face each other Oct. 13 at the Land O' Lakes Recreation Center. Hilgenberg says the girls team has good numbers and a lot of the swimmers were on club teams this summer to prepare for the high-school season. MitchellCOACH: MaryJo Artura (first year) DISTRICT: 2A-5 HOME POOL: Gills YMCA, Trinity KEY RETURNING SWIMMERS: Boys - Devin McCaffrey, Gavin Hunt, Ian Ondrejka, Anthony Chang. Girls - Mazie Siddens, Amanda Maser, Paige Hammer. SWIMMERS LOST: Boys - Dave Tomcryk, Alex Wegener, Andrew Wert. Girls - Shannon Gluck, Jillian Green. OUTLOOK: For the third consecutive year, there is a new coach at Mitchell. But Artura has come into a good situation. The majority of last year's boys team that was region runner-up and placed 12th at the state meet has returned, including sophomore Devin McCaffrey, seniors Gavin Hunt and Ian Ondrejka, all of whom placed at the state meet. The girls will be led by Siddens, a junior who went to state last year for the second consecutive year. Numbers are in Mitchell's favor, as Artura was greeted by 46 swimmers this season. RidgewoodCOACHES: Girls - Sue Vien (first year); Boys - Randi Morrell (first year) DISTRICT: 2A-5 HOME POOL: New Port Richey Recreation Center KEY RETURNING SWIMMERS: Boys - Joe Geschke, Anthony Fleres, Dylan Disbro. Girls - Liz Clum, Ashley Michaud.. SWIMMERS LOST: None. OUTLOOK: Vien has a full deck of swimmers and divers this year, led by Joe Geschke, who placed in two events (200 and 500 freestyle) at the state meet. As for the girls, there are many athletes new to swimming who have been eager to learn and work hard. SunlakeCOACHES: Glenna Chamberlin (third year), Val Moehle (first year), Vicki Anderson (second year) DISTRICT: 2A-5 HOME POOL: Land O' Lakes Recreation Center, Collier Parkway KEY RETURNING SWIMMERS: Boys - Kyle Shaffer, Austin Wachsman, Austin Van Vliet, Devin Anderson, Nick Keach. Girls - Megan Huynh, Nicole Harder, Kaylin Sylvester, Julia Villicana, Hilary Jones. SWIMMERS LOST: Boys - None; Girls - Beth Tillman. OUTLOOK: The Seahawks have 12 seniors on the team, which will help the newcomers. "Our freshman class has been enthusiastic to watch and are quick learners," Chamberlin said. Most of Sunlake's key swimmers from last year are back, but state-qualifying diver Beth Tillman graduated. Wesley ChapelCOACH: Jim Cracchiolo (fourth year) DISTRICT: 2A-5 HOME POOL: Meadow Pointe 1 Clubhouse KEY RETURNING SWIMMERS: Boys - Kevin Koth, Stuart Trimble, Deven Bockner; Girls - Lindsay Blanset. SWIMMERS LOST: Girls - Pakakul Sopapong. Boys - None. OUTLOOK: The Wildcats have a young team, but Cracchiolo says the freshmen who have come out this year show a lot of promise and ambition. "They are intrinsically motivated to swim, and I'm very happy to welcome them as a part of our team," he said. Wiregrass RanchCOACHES: Boys - Tanner Schmitz (first year), Girls - Leah Zachewicz (first year) DISTRICT: 2A-5 HOME POOL: New Tampa Family YMCA KEY RETURNING SWIMMERS: Rebecca Pindral, Makayla Strickland, Fern Powell, Toni Tomei. Boys - Zac Serota, Brandan Leroche. SWIMMERS LOST: None. OUTLOOK: The Bulls have new coaches, but the team is basically the same as last year's. The mindset of the team is to get better every day and the team is working hard. "We have a great group of senior leaders this year as well as a group of up-and-coming freshmen," Schmitz said. ZephyrhillsCOACHES: Girls - Linda Vest (first year); Girls - James Washington (first year) DISTRICT: 2A-5 HOME POOL: Hercules Aquatic Center, Zephyrhills KEY RETURNING SWIMMERS: Boys - Jordan Moss,Wes Novack, Kyle Van Buren. Cody Yingling, Casey Yingling. Girls - Lindsay Gorgen, Lettie Clark, April Durrett, Ashley Summer, Danielle Barnett. SWIMMERS LOST: Boys - Dylan Moss, Nick Adams, Kenny Betancourt-Reyes, Bob Carrico. Girls - India Anderton, Brooke Sanders, Candace Bryant, Jamie Guerette, Dani Guerette.. OUTLOOK: Vest takes over as coach the boys program, while Washington moves from the boys team to the girls. Vest is expecting big things from the Bulldogs' boys relays and the influx of talented underclassmen should help Zephyrhills at tournament time. Although Washington didn't coach the girls last year, he was the boys coach for four years so his roster is familiar. Clark and Gorgen qualified for the state meet last year.
