Longtime Pasco County football coach Castelamare resigns

John Castelamare is retiring after 43 years of coaching football.

The longtime staple in Pasco County stepped down Monday at Academy at the Lakes and will be replaced by his top assistant, Shawn Brown, according to athletic director Tom Haslem.

Castelamare took over the football program at AATL in March 2010 and helped bring immediate results, as the Wildcats have qualified and made deep runs in postseason playing 6-man and 7-man football.

The peak of Castelamare’s success was during his time at Wesley Chapel (1999-2009) where he led the Wildcats to two 10-0 records, three district titles, two Sunshine Athletic Conference championships and four postseason berths. Castelamare compiled a 63-50 record during his time with the Wildcats and was a combined 108-126 between his time at Ridgewood and Wesley Chapel.
