Most of the Pasco County teams will be competing at the boys weightlifting Class 1A-District 6 meet April 9, with competition starting at 3 p.m. at the Fivay High’s gym.
There will be no admission charge.
There are 15 teams in the district: Fivay, Anclote, Brooksville Central, Inverness Citrus, Citrus Crystal River, Gulf, Brooksville Hernando, Hudson, Citrus Lecanto, Brooksville Nature Coast, Pasco, River Ridge, Hernando Weeki Wachee, Wesley Chapel and Zephyrhills.
The winners have an automatic bid. The state then takes the next nine highest numbers to choose the other lifters, and the qualifiers compete in the Class 1A state meet on April 25 at the Kissimmee Civic Center.
“We may have three kids from our district who move on in each weight class,’’ Fivay coach Tim White said. “The only way the kids know they are going to state is they have to win. It takes like a week and a half to put that out.
“There will be a sectional championship and runner-up plaques. It’s tough to say who is the best. You don’t know roughly half the competition. Citrus has had very strong teams. Zephyrhills, Pasco, River Ridge have some strong teams. It comes down to how many first places. It’s tough to say who is going to win this thing.”
White thinks Fivay will have two kids with a legitimate chance of reaching state. One is 119-pound junior Josh Ortiz, who has been to state twice, and the other is 199-pound senior Davion Sutton.
Since there is only one meet before state, the pressure is on.
“It is extremely high stakes,” White said. “In the past, they would allow you to do two rounds of qualifiers. The open qualifier used to give us two sectionals. It is now a closed format.
“I do my best to make sure the lifters understand they’re always expected to perform. I do my best to make sure it’s just another day at the office.”
Sunlake hosts district meet
Sunlake, Land O’ Lakes, Wiregrass Ranch and Mitchell will compete April 9 at Sunlake in the 2A-District 3 meet. The Class 2A state meet will be April 26 at Kissimmee Civic Center.
