The Robinson High boys basketball team played outstanding defense and Tre Leonard had 19 points and 12 rebounds Thursday night as the Knights defeated host Alonso, 62-49, in the title game of the Buffalo Wild Wings Holiday Classic.
"It's a good win that will help us get more experience and more wins," said Leonard, who was named Most Valuable Player in the tournament.
Robinson sophomore guard Cody Brown had 14 points and junior Justin Madison added 10 points. Brown was named to the all-tournament team.
"My teammates attempted to get me the ball more today," said Brown, who made two 3-pointers. "My work paid off. I give my teammates credit."
Malachi Christopher, who also made the all-tournament team, led Alonso (8-6) with 13 points, while Greg Robinson and Efren Urena each added 12 points.
Robinson (11-2) led, 27-20, at halftime then put the game out of reach outscoring Alonso, 15-2, in the third quarter.
Alonso scored 27 points and narrowed its deficit to 53-43 in the fourth quarter. However, Brown hit a 3-pointer and Richie Yau made two free throws as Robinson increased its lead to 58-43 and withstood the Ravens' rally.
"Defense was the key to our game," Robinson coach Steve Smith said. "We played very good defense most of the game. We held our composure. It was a great win for the Knights."
