RUSKIN — Diontae Johnson returned two punts for touchdowns, freshman quarterback Devin Black threw two TD passes and Jahryn Bailey ran in three as Lennard blanked St. Petersburg Catholic.
Lennard’s defense was credited with eight sacks and a safety. The Longhorn defense held the Barons to minus-38 yards rushing and minus-22 yards overall.
Baron quarterback Jordan Leston doubled as a punter and when he went out with an injury in the second quarter, the team could not move the ball and poor punts gave Lennard optimum field position.
Bailey, who was sensational in the spring football game, scored touchdowns of 3, 23 and 31 yards. Josh Shellman, the other part of the tandem that gave a glimpse of their ability in the spring, had 45 yards on six carries.
Johnson has previously served as the Longhorns quarterback but it became apparent why a freshman was serving as the starting quarterback. His spiral throws easily went 50 yards. He completed passes to speedy wide receivers Johnson and Corey Hicks for completions of 29, 40, 43 and 32 yards.
