LAND O’ LAKES — During a performance many Land O’ Lakes players dedicated to the sudden passing of former offensive coordinator Bill Schmitz, the Gators threw for 397 yards, including 336 by junior James Pensyl, and the defense dominated in a clear victory at Benedetto Field.
Pensyl completed 22 of 31 passes and threw two TDs, a 40-yarder to Javin Tandy (105 receiving yards), and a 7-yarder to Ethan Weilant, who finished with 79 receiving yards. Tight end Liam Heaney had six catches for 125 yards and a touchdown catch from Weilant on a trick play.
“There’s no doubt (Pensyl) can throw the football, and tonight he started showing what we’ve known he has,” said Gators coach Brian Wachtel. “He was on the money tonight, and he got better with his reads.”
The shutout was Land O’ Lakes’ first since Oct. 9, 2009 against Anclote. The Royal Knights finished with 20 yards of offense.
Land O’ Lakes had eight sacks, two apiece by Shaheed Salmon and Jo Von Parrish. Colin Irwin had a sack and an interception.
