Prep track: Land O' Lakes, Wiregrass win district titles
WESLEY CHAPEL -
The road to state began Tuesday, and similar results stemmed from last year’s 3A-District 6 meet.
Land O’ Lakes (boys) and Wiregrass Ranch (girls) claimed team titles. For the Gators (125.5 points), it’s their second straight and for the Bulls (143 points), it’s their fifth.
“I told the kids about the old Chicago Bulls,” Land O’ Lakes coach Bill Schmitz said. “They had Michael Jordan. They had Scottie Pippen, but they also had others that contributed to them winning titles. We said every inch and every second counts in all these races. Kids really stepped up tonight.”
Land O’ Lakes’ Tyler Stahl edged Wiregrass Ranch’s Ermias Brieda in the 1,600-meter run (4:27.25) and also took the 3,200 in 10:07.92. In the 100, Sunlake’s Eddie Burgos beat out Zephyrhills’ Jordan Roberts with a time of 10.92.
On the girls end, Zephyrhills’ Kara Young won her third straight title in the 100 and Land O’ Lakes’ Hallie Grimes pulled off her third title in the 400 (57.25). Wiregrass Ranch’s Nikita Shah won her first district title in the 1,600 (5:05.31) and was second in the 3,200 (10:59.82).
“Every one of them is exciting,” Wiregrass Ranch coach Don Howard said about the team’s five district titles. “It’s tougher to hang on to the titles. You tend to lose focus and teams want to beat you. Girls get a little lackadaisical and you have to light a fire under them every now and then.”
