HOLIDAY — It was a long journey for Land O’ Lakes High girls track and field coach Rock Ridgeway in winning his first Sunshine Athletic Conference championship as a coach Monday night at Anclote.
The Land O’ Lakes staple earned his first SAC crown as the Gators edged Wiregrass Ranch, 142-109.
Land O’ Lakes’ boys completed the sweep by easily getting by second-place Ridgewood, 197.33-73.
“I think we did an excellent overall job completely,” Ridgeway said. “The field events were covered. We had 90 points alone in the field events. Super, super job done by everybody on the whole team.”
Land O’ Lakes has been a dominant force on the boys’ side for some time, but the Gators finally were able to upend Wiregrass Ranch on the girls’ end.
Among the winners for the Gators girls were Hallie Grimes in the 400 meters (58.88) and Victoria Cannata in the triple jump.
Others who claimed conference titles were Pasco’s Alfreda Steele in the 100 (12.15) and 200 (24.87), and Mitchell’s Emily Kerns, who swept the distance events by taking the 800, 1,600 and 3,200.
For the boys, Anclote (69.33) finished third with Wiregrass Ranch (55) and Sunlake (53) following.
Anclote’s Jamaree Reid had another solid meet, taking the 110 (15.24) and 300 (39.93) meter hurdles. Also standing out was Zephyrhills’ Jordan Roberts, who nabbed crowns in the 100 (11.23) and 400 (53.79).
“Well the boys work very hard,” Land O’ Lakes coach Craig Moore said. “The foundation was here when I took over as the boys’ coach and coach (Ridgeway) has mentored me throughout this and everyone has just done such a great job.”
