TRINITY — In a game touted as a showdown of Class 6A-District 6 foes, Land O’ Lakes continued to show why it may be in a class of its own.
The Gators, known for their high-flying passing attack, found a different way to win — with the running game. Land O’ Lakes racked up more than 200 yards on the ground en route to a 45-21 thrashing of Mitchell on Friday night at Mustang Stadium.
“I just wanted to hit the hole hard, and that’s what all the coaches have been telling me,” Land O’ Lakes running back Larenz Scroggins said. “I haven’t had a great first couple of games, but I wanted to ball out and show what I can do.”
Scroggins rushed for 126 yards on 15 carries, and his 57-yard touchdown with 6:11 left proved to be the back-breaker.
Christian Trinidad (20 carries, 144 yards) scored on a 13-yard sweep to give Mitchell (2-2, 0-1) a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
Land O’ Lakes (4-0, 1-0) came back, and quarterback James Pensyl (18 of 30, 279 yards) found Javin Tandy for an 83-yard touchdown. Pensyl added an 11-yard scoring run later in the quarter.
The Gators added a 22-yard touchdown run from receiver Ethan Weilant (33 yards rushing) for a 21-7 lead.
Mitchell could not find an answer Land O’ Lakes’ up-tempo offense, as the Gators tallied 512 total yards (279 passing, 233 rushing) and turned over the football once. The Mustangs’ vaunted Wing-T attack was held to 148 yards on 37 carries.
“We told our kids to take this season one game at a time, one week at a time,” Land O’ Lakes coach Brian Wachtel said. “That was a good Mitchell team we played, and they’re going to do some good things in the district.”
