TAMPA — King High student-athlete Greg Thompson has been suspended and will not return to school pending a special hearing following his arrest during spring break.
Thompson, King’s leading rusher and scorer this past football season, was arrested March 16 and on charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of cannabis, less than 20 grams, and carrying a concealed firearm, according to an arrest report.
Thompson, 18, was released from the Hillsborough County Jail two days later after posting $1,000 bond.
On Monday, King athletic director Dennis Donaldson said the senior was suspended 10 days following the arrest, an automatic course of action he said, and will not return until he attends a school district change of placement hearing.
Thompson, a running back, led the Lions’ football team with 757 rushing yards and six touchdowns and finished with a team-best 36 points scored.
