TAMPA — In a game much closer than the score indicated, King finally got its running game going in the second half to defeat Freedom in a game full of costly errors.
Thanks to three first-half fumbles by the Lions, Freedom hung tough, trailing 7-6 at halftime. However, the second half belonged to King, as it erupted for 27 points, thanks in large part to a couple of Patriots mistakes, including having three consecutive punts blocked.
A Javontee Brice 24-yard touchdown reception from King quarterback Darian Wright between two Otis Williams touchdown runs iced the game for the Lions.
Third-string Lions tailback Paul Harper added an 80-yard TD run late in the fourth.
Freedom’s lone touchdown came on a 28-yard pitch-and-catch from DJ Grant to Sayff Saed midway through the second quarter to give the Patriots their only lead of the game.
Lions starting running back Greg Thompson led the way with 92 yards on 15 carries.
Next week, King travels to Lennard, while Freedom visits Middleton.
