Juan Fontela was named Jefferson’s head coach, athletic director Bernard Cannon announced.
Fontela, a 1996 Jefferson graduate, served as an assistant to Pop Cuesta for five seasons. Cuesta recently retired after 43 years as the Dragons’ head coach.
“Pop has been here 43 years and done great things for the Jefferson Dragons baseball team,” Fontela said. “It’s an honor, with the impact he’s had on so many players, to be taking over for him.”
Prior to moving to Jefferson, Fontela was the head coach at Robinson for two years.
Jefferson second baseman Jony Gonzalez and center fielder Trey Robinson signed with Faulkner State Community College in Bay Minette, Ala., Cuesta announced.
Gonzalez hit .303 with 17 runs and 13 RBIs for the Class 6A-District 9 champion Dragons. Robinson was sidelined early in the season with a wrist injury but returned and scored 15 runs and stole eight bases in 17 games.
