TAMPA — On a night when it wasn’t at its sharpest, Jefferson still earned a dominant victory thanks to a player not many knew about before Friday’s game.
Sophomore quarterback Cade Weldon, making his first varsity start, accounted for a combined 162 yards and four touchdowns, while a blitzing Dragons defense consistently stifled visiting Alonso.
“It’s a tribute to him, because he wants to learn so badly and keep getting better,” Jefferson coach Jeremy Earle said of Weldon. “The star’s the limit with him.”
After a slow start, running backs Mondreas Lofton (six carries for 55 yards) and Corey Walker (12-54) sparked the Dragons’ first scoring drive, capped by a Weldon 15-yard fade pass to Maurice Moore. Then, after consecutive sacks forced a punt, Weldon hit Antonio Nunn from 27 yards out for the Dragons’ second TD in as many plays.
“Once we got some things figured out and our running game going, we were able to take over the football game,” Earle added.
Weldon connected with Quinton Rogers on a 4-yard slant for a third consecutive touchdown, and the sophomore scored on a 25-yard keeper late in the third quarter to put the game away.
