The Academy of the Holy Names had plenty of close matches Wednesday in its 2A-District 9 tournament at Auburndale, but the Jaguars ended up dropping only one match.
The Jaguars’ No. 1, Caroline Lozo, led the charge with a 7-5, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles, which earns her a trip to the state tournament in a couple of weeks. Lozo and Olivia Rivas also won at No. 1 doubles, earning another ticket to the state tournament.
Other Jaguar winners in singles matches included: No. 2 Caitlin Neal 6-4, 6-1; No. 3 Rivas 6-1, 6-1; No. 4 Grayson Garraty 6-4, 7-6; and No. 5 Maddie Bales 6-4, 6-2.
“This was a new district this year for us, so we were basically coming in blind to the tournament,” AHN coach Sean Craft said. “I told the girls they had to be ready for anything and they responded very well.”
4A-6: Newsome sweeps titles
Age apparently isn’t an issue for Newsome. Despite seeing its top two singles players from last year’s district title team graduate, Newsome won its second consecutive district, sweeping the field and earning the maximum points allowed at the 4A-District 6 tournament at Lakeland Jenkins.
Freshman Kylie Mullin earned an automatic trip to the state tournament and remained undefeated, defeating Jenkins’ Taylor Oliver, the two-time Polk County champion, 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles bracket. Freshman Tess Studdiford also remained undefeated at No. 2 singles, defeating Strawberry Crest’s Morenike Fashoro 6-1, 6-0 Mullin and Studdiford won the No. 1 doubles match over Jenkins, securing a spot in the individual state doubles bracket, 6-0, 6-2.
Strawberry Crest finished third with seven points, while Durant placed fourth with five points.
2A-8: Fivay claims championship
NEW PORT RICHEY — Fivay, which was undefeated in district play this season, won the Class 2A-District 8 title. Fivay was led by four individual champions, which was enough to edge out Tarpon Springs for the title.
Amber Mariano, Ashleigh Day, Brianna Tonello, and Alyssa Dierking brought home district titles for the Falcons. In doubles action, Tonello and Courtney Watson were also champions.
1A-8: Seffner’s Brown claims title
For the first time in school history, Seffner Christian has crowned a district tennis champion.
It happened at the 1A-District 8 tournament in Lakeland, where junior Crusader Audrey Brown won her No. 1 singles championship match 7-5, 6-2.
The victory also made Brown a perfect 11-0 on the season and earned her a trip to the state tennis tournament in a couple of weeks.
Brown and teammate Ally Helsel made it to Wednesday’s No. 1 doubles final, but lost 7-6, 6-2.
