TAMPA — Hillsborough may have been 0-2 to start the season, but it had quite a performance on both sides of the ball against Leto.
The Terriers scored on their first drive of the game when junior quarterback Dwayne Lawson threw a 45-yard bomb for a touchdown to sophomore wide receiver John Hughes. Lawson went 14 for 19 with four touchdowns and 202 yards. Moments later on Leto’s following drive, the Hillsborough defense stepped up to block the punt attempt and Terrier defensive back Mike Hampton ran the ball into the end zone for a 20-yard touchdown. After holding a 20-3 lead in the second quarter, the Hillsborough offense exploded. The Terriers scored four times in a 2:45 span — three TDs and a 37-yard field goal. The Hillsborough defense also came up big with three interceptions.
After the win, Lawson credited his receivers for his performance against Leto, led by Hughes, who had three TD receptions.
“They came up really big tonight and that was important after coming into this game without winning a game,” Lawson said.
