NEW PORT RICHEY — With one game left to play before the Class 5A-District 8 tournament next week, Gulf showed that its offense is more than prepared for tough competition.
The Buccaneers continued to hit well, getting nine hits and taking advantage of three Zephyrhills errors en route to a 13-2 victory in five innings on senior night.
“Coming into this game, we knew we wanted to make this a fun night,” Gulf pitcher Madison Morlan said. “Of course, it’s hard coming out here on the field for the last time, but we knew we had to hit the ball well heading into next week.”
Gulf (17-4) started off slow against pitcher Selena Tinajero (three strikeouts), as the Buccaneers only got two hits in the first three innings. Zephyrhills (12-11) put runs on the board first, with Tiayanna Leddick doubling home Hannah Borgemenke and Skylar Graves in the top of the fourth.
Holding a 2-0 lead, the Bulldogs ran into trouble against the meat of Gulf’s batting order. Gulf scored 11 runs in the inning, including a three-run homer from Rachel Gardner.
The Buccaneers added a couple of runs in the bottom of the fifth to secure the victory.
Morlan pitched five innings and allowed three hits and struck out seven in the win.
