Golf: Boys and girls state preview



WHEN: Today-Wednesday

WHERE: Mission Inn Resort & Club’s El Campeon Course, 10400 County Road 48, Howey-in-the-Hills

LOCAL TEAM: Jesuit – Alec Murawski, Matthew Ruel, Kurt Sierra, Joseph Trim, Ethan White

LOCAL INDIVIDUAL: Andrew Skora (Robinson)

OUTLOOK: Murawski finished in a three-way tie for second place at last week’s region tournament with a 75 to lead the Tigers to a team 307. Jesuit finished as the Class 2A-Region 5 runner-up behind Mitchell (304). The Tigers have been led this season by Ruel, whose 4-under 68 at the district tournament earned the sophomore individual medalist honors and lifted Jesuit to its eighth straight district crown. Skora, a sophomore, finished one stroke off the leader with a 79 at the region tournament, earning a spot at states by finishing second (fourth overall) in a tiebreaker.

WHERE: Deer Island Golf & Lake Club, 18000 Eagles Way, Tavares

LOCAL TEAM: Tampa Catholic – Lucas Mylet, AJ Pascua, Nilo Sanchez, Joe Testerman, Ryan Williams

OUTLOOK: Tampa Catholic was happy to be at the state tournament a season ago as the 2012 squad put together the best season in school history. This year, the Crusaders are hoping to improve on their 13th-place finish in 2012. Four of the team’s golfers return to the tournament this season after finishing as the 1A-Region 5 runner-up behind a 71 from Sanchez. Sanchez also led the way to a district title with a 75 at Westchase earlier in the month.

WHERE: Mission Inn Resort & Club’s Las Colinas Course, 10400 County Road 48, Howey-in-the-Hills

LOCAL TEAM: Academy of the Holy Names – Bailey Boesch, Mariah Diaz, Emmy Martin, Casey Pluchino, Georgia Ruffolo

OUTLOOK: The Jaguars’ seniors, Diaz and Pluchino, helped their team to the state tournament for the fourth time since attending as eighth-graders in 2009, while Martin makes her fifth appearance at the state level. Last season, Martin finished 10 strokes off the lead in 15th place, while the Jaguars were 12th as a team. With an eighth-place finish (2011) and a ninth-place team finish (2009), AHN has a skilled squad looking to make the most of its senior leadership. Martin won her third straight district and region individual crowns this season.

WHERE: Harbor Hills Country Club, Lake Griffin Road, Lady Lake

LOCAL TEAMS: Berkeley Prep – Danielle Campbell, Elaine Donigan, Anjali Kapadia, Samantha Lee, Alexis Smith; Tampa Prep – Lilly Berry, Katie Hochhauser, Symon Hutchinson, Olivia Kresic, Morgan Peterson

LOCAL INDIVIDUAL: Alison Armstrong (Cambridge Christian)

OUTLOOK: Led by Berry, a sixth-grader, Tampa Prep captured the region crown last week. Cambridge’s Armstrong finished the region tournament with an 81 before winning a tiebreaker to advance to the state tournament.
