NEED TO KNOW: Despite the Mitchell boys golf team’s success over the years, this is the Mustangs’ first region title. Remarkably, Mitchell has sent only one boys golfer to states in program history and that was Dylan Strout in 2011-12. This season, however, shows the depth of Mitchell’s team led by Donnie Gabrelcik, who may be the team’s best golfer, but is slated into the team’s No. 3 spot. Ahead of him is Anthony Swinford and Mike Spinger, both of whom can shoot par or lower, but throw in Max Sabo, and Mitchell has high expectations for a state title this week. … The Mustangs’ female counterparts are making their second state appearance and first since 2009. They do so, this time, without a Van Etten, but still bring Shyanne Dove, Mackenzie Bennett, Ashley Richardson and Lindsey Ritchey, all of who can shoot in the 70s and keep the Mustangs in title contention. … Sunlake sends two golfers to states individually, with the Seahawks top male golfer, Jake Roberts, and top female golfer, Kelly Harris, after they shot 75 and 85 at regions.

NEED TO KNOW: Saddlebrook Prep boys team returns to states after finishing sixth last season, but, more importantly, it returns most of the same golfers that helped them place that high. Ryoto Furuya, Won Jun Lee and Joe He have proven at districts and regions that they can all bring in low scores, including Furuya and Lee, who have shot under par at both tourneys. Michael Feng has also gone low, and if all four could put together low rounds, a state title might be in line for the Spartans.
