TAMPA — Gaither defeated Wiregrass Ranch to stay perfect in Class 7A-District 7 play.
The Cowboys (3-3), the reigning 7A-7 champions, entered the contest having dropped three of their previous four games, including a shutout at Durant last week in which Gaither managed only one first down before halftime.
The Cowboys switched between a no-huddle and read-option offense against the Bulls (2-3), which coach Jason Stokes said helped improve production.
“I think we were able to see things a little better and we got lined up quicker with those changes,” Stokes said.
The Cowboys opened the scoring when quarterback Alex McGough ran for a 3-yard touchdown, but Wiregrass Ranch stayed within a score throughout the game before Gaither posted 17 unanswered fourth-quarter points.
“That’s a good team,” Stokes said. “That team has talent, and it feels good to get another W against a team with that kind of fight.”
The Cowboys’ defense forced three turnovers, including a 76-yard interception return for a touchdown by Javon Hammond for the final points.
