RIVERVIEW — Trailing Riverview in the third quarter, Freedom added some late-game magic to rally and win the season finale for both teams.
The first half was a defensive struggle as both teams were held scoreless. Riverview’s best chance at scoring was driving down to the Freedom 39-yard line, but the Sharks lost the ball on a fumble.
Freedom got to the Riverview 35 as time was expiring in the first half, but the Patriots’ long field-goal attempt was blocked.
On its first possession after halftime, Riverview broke through with a 33-yard touchdown run by Keisean Young. Freedom responded on its next possession with a 75-yard drive and scored on a 6-yard TD pass from DJ Grant to Calvin Bido-Vega. The point-after was no good and Riverview led 7-6.
Riverview stayed in the game as Fred McCoy continued to pick up first downs on the ground and use up the clock.
But with two minutes left in the fourth quarter and Riverview on fourth down from the Freedom 25-yard line, Freedom forced a fumble and Isaiah Smith picked it up and ran 75 yards for the game-winning touchdown.
Grant completed 16 of 28 passes for 152 yards for the Patriots. McCoy had 106 yards rushing on 20 carries for the Sharks.
