ST. PETERSBURG — Coming off blowout victories in its first two games of the regular season, St. Petersburg entered Thursday's contest at Lakewood with plenty of mojo.
But Donterio Fowler opened the game with a scintillating 85-yard kickoff return to give the Spartans a 7-0 lead, and Tyrae Boykins followed with an 11-yard touchdown run on Lakewood's next series.
A 39-yard run for a score by Fowler a couple of minutes before the end of the first quarter gave the Spartans a 21-0 lead that essentially demoralized the Green Devils, who would never recover as Lakewood cruised to a 28-3 win.
“We wanted to jump out to a quick start and be super fast and aggressive,” Lakewood coach Corey Moore said. “We knew they'd try and establish the run, and we made sure to make it as tough as possible for them.”
The Spartans held the Green Devils to 104 rushing yards and 61 passing yards. On the flip side, Lakewood had nine runners combine to rush for 285 yards, led by Romello Presely's 82 yards.
Presely added a 3-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter for the Spartans.
Deangelo Reeves led the Green Devils with 108 rushing yards on 19 carries, although more than half of them came on a 55-yard run.
Lakewood offensive lineman Isaiah Wynn went down with a sprained ankle midway through the game. Wynn is a highly recruited lineman. His status is questionable for next week.
