Four Pasco girls excel at state weightlifting

KISSIMMEE — Four Pasco County girls earned medals Saturday at the state weightlifting meet at the Kissimmee Civic Center.

River Ridge High’s Kiara Wood took second place in the 119-pound class. The junior, who had a bench press of 155 pounds and a 160-pound clean and jerk for a personal-best total of 315 pounds, said she exceeded her expectations.

“I was expecting top six,’’ Wood said. “That was a personal best. I’m a junior. I have one more year. I will work really hard this year. I didn’t think I would get second. I’m proud of myself.”

Said Wood’s coach, Mike DeGennaro: “She did really well. She had a good day.”

Wood is the third River Ridge lifter to place second at state. Last year, Alexis LiCalsi took first in the 139-pound class.

Pasco’s Eunique Byrd had a 230-pound bench press and 195-pound clean to take third in the unlimited class with a 425-pound total.

Hudson junior Renee LeDoux took fourth with a 325-pound total in the 154-pound class. She also took home a state medal as a freshman.

Sunlake’s Catalina Valdez took sixth in the 183-pound class with a 345-pound total.

Port Orange Spruce Creek won its ninth state title in 11 years with 28 points. Navarre was second with 17 points,
