Football: Which county candidate is the best?
TAMPA - All three players are among the nation's best at their position. All three have been sought after by Division I universities around the nation. And all three are seniors who are on the verge of what could be some of the best performances Hillsborough County has seen from a high school player. So if you were picking a best player from this trio, who would you vote for? Who would you choose if you were starting your own high school football team and needed someone who had mad skills, smarts and, most importantly, the leadership ability to put a team on his back and carry it to victory? In their own words, we'll let our three candidates for "Mr. Hillsborough County Football 2012" tell you in their own words why you should pick them for that title. And then we'll let you vote for your favorite candidate in an online poll on TBO.com before the start of the season. -----CANDIDATE: Jordan Sherit POSITION: Defensive end/tight end/long snapper HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 6-5/234 lbs. HIGH SCHOOL: Hillsborough YEAR: Senior COLLEGE CHOICE: Florida ESPN POSITION RANKING: No. 21 RIVALS POSITION RATING: No. 9 (4 stars) PERFORMANCE SPECS: 40-yard dash -- 4.78 seconds; Vertical jump -- 37 inches; Shuttle -- 4.28 seconds. 2011 STATS: Defense -- 110 tackles (team leader), 9 sacks (team leader), 5 fumble recoveries (team leader), 1 pass defended. Offense -- 5 receptions, 71 yards, 3 TDs. Also scored two conversions. SCOUTS SAY: Very similar in ability to former Alonso star and current University of Miami defensive end Anthony Chickillo, with outstanding range and mobility. Excellent pass rusher who gets off the ball quickly before linemen can get set to block him. Has the brute strength to get around blockers and goes hard every down. Has the frame a college team can build on to make him even bigger and stronger. Intelligent player who will not commit costly errors on game day. A team leader on and off the field. WHY VOTE FOR ME: I have a winning smile. I have a weighted GPA of 5.5 and I'm a member for the International Baccalaureate program and National Honor Society at my school. I have a broad appeal because I come from a multi-ethnic background made up of family from Cuba, Israel, Spain, Austria and Morocco. I am actually the first person in my family born in the United States. If needed, I would help the elderly cross the street. For my 75 service hours required by the IB program, I usually help people do difficult tasks like yard work. In my four years at Hillsborough, I've never missed a practice. I sprained an ankle badly once and couldn't work out but I still came to practice. I'm loyal to my school and have never entertained the idea of transferring. I recently saved the life of a turtle. I was driving my car, saw it in the road and said 'Nope, not gonna let this little guy get run over.' So I stopped my car, jumped out and got him out of the road.' That's the kind of guy I am. Friend to kids, small animals and the elderly. ----- CANDIDATE: Alvin Bailey POSITION: Athlete/wide receiver HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 6-0/175 lbs. HIGH SCHOOL: Armwood YEAR: Senior COLLEGE CHOICE: Undecided. Finalists include Arkansas, Auburn, Central Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Notre Dame, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, USF and Vanderbilt ESPN POSITION RANKING: No. 6 RIVALS POSITION RATING: No. 16 (4 stars) PERFORMANCE SPECS: 100-meter dash -- 10.82 seconds; Shuttle -- 4.21 seconds; Long jump -- 20 feet, 8 inches. 2011 STATS: Offense -- 836 yards, 10 TDs, 4 INTs passing, 833 yards and 6 TDs rushing on 100 carries, 376 yards and 2 YDs on 22 pass receptions. Also scored two conversions. SCOUTS SAY: Time and again last season, Bailey showed he has big-play ability that produces "Wow!" moments by turning what looks to be a loss of yardage or busted play into a huge gain. He did that scrambling from the wildcat QB position and at wide out with his outstanding production after the catch. Whatever he might lack in size, he more than makes up for in elusiveness and deceptively good speed. He is without question the county's most feared player with the ball in his hands and en route to the Hawks' state title run last fall, was their Most Valuable Player on offense. WHY VOTE FOR ME: I'm a state champion in football, my hair is great and my smile is pretty great, too. I'm one of our captains this season. In track, I helped our team break our school record in the 4x100-meter relay four times, broke the county record and were (Class 3A) state runners-up in the event. I'm close to a 3.0 GPA in school and I'm willing to do anything and play any position for my team. I proved that last year. Even though I want to play receiver in college, I played QB (during the injury of Darryl Richardson). I love to cook and want to major in a culinary arts-related field in college. I like helping people. When I see homeless people on the street, I try to give them a couple of dollars. I don't make them do anything for it like dance. I don't want to humiliate them or anything. I just try to give them some money. And I love kids and coaching them. I've helped coach the University Area Bulls youth football team the last two years. ----- CANDIDATE: Vernon Hargreaves III POSITION: Defensive back/wide receiver/kick returner HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 5-11/185 lbs. HIGH SCHOOL: Wharton YEAR: Senior COLLEGE CHOICE: Florida ESPN POSITION RANKING: No. 1 RIVALS POSITION RATING: No. 2 (5 stars) PERFORMANCE SPECS: 40-yard dash -- 4.45 seconds; Vertical jump -- 34.5 inches; Shuttle -- 4.12 seconds. 2011 STATS: Defense -- 49 tackles, 3 passes defended, 2 interceptions, 1 fumble recovery, 3 blocked field goals. Offense -- 313 yards and 3 TDs on 13 pass receptions, 237 yards and 7 TDs rushing on 35 carries, 3 TDs. Also scored 7 conversions. Returns -- 311 yards and 1 TD on 7 kickoff returns, 54 yards on six punt returns. SCOUTS SAY: Has the uncanny ability to swivel at the hips and hardly lose a step or speed as he transitions from a back-peddle to full sprint. ESPN says Hargreaves is ''One of the more complete and ready-to-play (college) corners we have seen in recent years.'' Is the son of USF assistant coach of the same name and dad has clearly passed on plenty of knowledge and skills to his son. Always seems to be in the right position, breaks on the ball well and has shown the ability to be a physical tackler. Does nearly everything as a cornerback at a college level and has made major contributions to the Wildcats offense when needed. WHY VOTE FOR ME: I'm honest and straightforward. What you see is what you get. I'm not a showboat athlete. I don't need the limelight. In fact, I tend to avoid it. I don't do dances or anything like that after scoring touchdowns. I just hand the ball to the referee. But I do think I'm a charming guy. You could say I have a way with the ladies but right now, I don't have a steady girlfriend. I'm not a loner. I have lots of friends and could win homecoming king without entering it. I'm that popular. I have lots more followers than Sherit and Bailey on Twitter. I'm a clean person. I take several showers a day. I'm a good student with a 3.6 GPA. I'm a good citizen and a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. If they needed it, I, like Sherit, would help an elderly person cross the street. Style-wise, I'm not into designer labels and I don't like flashy stuff. But I do have a thing for athletic shoes. Lots of them.
