Football two-a-days: Newsome, Steinbrenner

Newsome COACH: Kenneth Hiscock 2011 RECORD: 6-4 KEY LOSSES: RB Keller Powers, OL Keith Weeks, LB/RB Jorge Thompson, WR Brian West.
KEY RETURNERS: QB/LB Will Worth, RB Clint Carnell, WR/DB Aaron Wade, RB/DE John Hendricks, LB Jacques Braggs, LB Noah Schaller, TE Matt Hines. SPRING FOCUS: Hiscock, starting his seventh season, has welcomed 62 players this spring and likes the atmosphere. "It's been fun coming out to practice with the effort the kids are giving," he said. The Wolves have some talented personnel back to run the Wing-T offense. Worth took on more carries late last season, sometimes out of the shotgun, and Hiscock said Worth was "up to the challenge." The Wolves will be aiming for balance with Carnell and Hendricks on the ground and Wade stretching the field. Most of the secondary is back and Hiscock said his linebackers have good speed. The Wolves will need to rebuild the defensive line a bit. "We only return one," Hiscock said. "It's a work in progress, but we're looking good so far in the spring." Disappointing losses to Brandon and Durant ended the Wolves' playoff chances last year, but they finished with three straight wins and Hiscock sees that attitude continuing. "I think that (the losses) made the kids hungrier," he said. "That was something that drove them this offseason." JAMBOREE: May 24 vs. Bloomingdale, Newsome (at Brandon) 2012 SCHEDULE Aug. 24 – at Steinbrenner (Kickoff classic) Aug. 31 – Tampa Bay Tech Sept. 7 – Jefferson Sept. 14 – at Hillsborough Sept. 21 – at East Bay Sept. 28 – at Chamberlain Oct. 5 – Brandon Oct. 12 – Open Oct. 19 – at Durant Oct. 26 – at Riverview Nov. 2 – Plant City Nov. 9 – Bloomingdale Mark Pukalo Steinbrenner COACH: Floyd Graham 2011 RECORD: 7-3 KEY LOSSES: OL Alex Vega, OL Tommy Forward, OL Tyler Hampton, OL Joey Ross, OL Matthew Borders, DB Danny Fernandez, DB Andrew Feldhaus KEY RETURNERS: QB Curtis Fitch, RB Kendall Pearcy, WR John Marc, WR Jake Carroll, RB/LB Logan McKnight, LB Amiri Brown, DB Trey Johnson SPRING FOCUS: Coming off a great year for the young Warriors, Graham and company now have the arduous task of rebuilding the offensive line from tackle to tackle. "It was a whole senior line with a backfield that will be coming back full force," Graham said. "That's all we really lost." Looking to replace those five are Blaine Tucker, Chris Harrison, Nick Bosco, Zach Goldsmith and Brian Hale. Graham, however, is playing it safe by holding back his top running back, Pearcy (776, 11 TD) and receiver Carroll (186 yards, 3 TD) after a broken leg and torn ACL, respectively. So many new players will look to get plenty of reps with returning quarterback Fitch, who had 815 passing yards and nine touchdowns, but also 10 interceptions. Despite losing 19 seniors to graduation, the biggest blows are the departures of the offensive line and Fernandez, a captain. "Between the offensive line and Fernandez, that's a lot of leadership loss, so many guys will have to step up into roles that they've seen as either back ups or underclassmen and lead this team," Graham said. Graham also thinks the defense will be improved, especially with the return of the top two defenders: McKnight (96 tackles, 7 sacks) and Brown (93 tackles, 7 sacks).
