Flag football: Indians knock out Plant City
It was a day of firsts for East Bay as the Indians downed Plant City, 33-19, in Saturday’s State Region Tournament Round 1 play-in game. The victory was the first in seven tries against the Raiders and was also the first time the Indians won a playoff game. East Bay (11-3) travels to play Robinson in the second round Tuesday. Madeline Hornacek hit receiver Jarmeela Shaw on a post pattern that she took in for a score to put East Bay ahead 7-6. After Plant City took a 19-13 lead, Hornacek ran in from 2 yards out to put East Bay up 20-19. Shaw finished with six catches for 100 yards.After East Bay’s defense stopped Plant City and took over on downs, the Raiders let Hornacek score on an 18-yard run to put them up 27-19. Tyler McFarlane closed out the scoring with a 26-yard interception return on the last play of the game. Robinson shuts out Alonso to advance Senior Deliah Autry’s standout play at quarterback and defensive back led Robinson to a 21-0 victory against host Alonso in Saturday’s State Region Tournament Round 1 play-in game. Autry moved the Knights (13-1) down the field on the opening drive, finding Samantha Ishee on a 4-yard TD pass. On the ensuing drive, Autry took a pass out of the hands of an Alonso receiver for an interception. From there she connected with a wide-open Crystal Ortiz in the end zone late in the first quarter. Robinson scored the game’s final touchdown just before halftime. Autry found Cornika Wright down the left sideline, and she outran the defense for a 50-yard score. “It definitely gives me confidence to know I have a receiver like her and our other receivers,” Autry said. Robinson’s Amanda Chromiak had four sacks.
