Fivay earns two medals

— Fivay High’s Davion Sutton earned the school’s first medal, Josh Ortiz took the second and Pasco High’s Andrew Ivie took the second medal in his family Friday at the State Boys Weightlifting Class 1A Meet at the Kissimmee Civic Center.

Both Sutton and Ivie took home fifth-place medals. Sutton was in the 199-pound class. He had a bench press of 335 pounds and a clean and jerk of 285 pounds for a 620-pound total.

Ortiz took sixth in the 119-pound class.

“I didn’t get to lift last year,’’ said Sutton. “It was nerve-wracking. It was my first time at state. I will go out with a bang. I got fifth in the state. I broke my ankle a week before weightlifting started a year ago.”

Ivie had a 390-pound bench press and a 315-pound clean and jerk in the heavyweight class. His older brother, Joey, had the same total when he took fourth two years ago. The elder Ivie is now playing football at the University of Florida.

Andrew Ivie also took fourth place in the state in wrestling.

“I did what I could do,’’ said Ivie. “I’m going to win next year. I’m happy about it. It didn’t bother me. I focus on what I have to do.”

Ortiz cut 3 1/2 pounds for the event. It was the junior’s third trip to state.

“I can’t be mad about it,’’ Ortiz said. “I didn’t hit my second clean and jerk. I cut weight every week.”

Pasco’s Jacob Morphew took 11th in the 219-pound class. He had a bench press of 305 pounds and a clean and jerk of 280 for a 585-pound total.

River Ridge’s Brent Gwinn had 200 pounds in the bench press and 180 in the clean and jerk for a 380-pound total. He was 12th in the 129-pound class.

Zephyrhills’s Malik Mutcherson had a 570-pound total in the 169-pound class.
