TARPON SPRINGS — Coming into the Class 7A region quarterfinal, East Lake’s closest margin of victory this season was a 22-0 win over Largo.
That all changed Friday night, as East Lake defeated Palmetto 13-12.
Despite outgaining the Tigers in total yards 234 to 59, East Lake went into halftime tied 6-6 with the Tigers.
After snuffing out the Tigers’ fake punt at midfield in the third quarter, the Eagles took over and six plays later Artavis Scott scored on a 13-yard run to give East Lake a 13-6 lead.
Palmetto answered on the ensuing drive as quarterback Sean Allison threw a 23-yard pass to a diving Katrell Hubbard in the end zone. The extra point was no good, leaving the Tigers trailing 13-12.
The Eagles were able to run the clock out on the legs of Weston Fordham. Fordham was a workhouse for the Eagles rushing 110 yards on 20 carries.
Palmetto got the ball with two minutes remaining, but was unable to get a first down. East Lake’s Regis Steighner had two of his three sacks on the last possession of the game.
